Each Boys & Girls Club offers a unique set of FUNplay sports league experiences that emphasize life skills and participation – not who wins or loses. Sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and determination are stressed while kids learn the basics of football, soccer, basketball, t-ball, baseball/softball, volleyball, and other team-based sports. League play is seasonal and varies from Club to Club.
Major League Baseball and local Boys & Girls Clubs are working to increase participation in baseball and fast-pitch softball leagues in the inner city. A major function of RBI, a free program for youth ages 11-18, is to introduce participants to life skills lessons. All RBI leagues incorporate Quick SMART!, a condensed version of SMART Moves prevention/education program designed to teach players to avoid alcohol and other drug use and premature sexual involvement. The Seattle Mariners, Ichiro Suzuki, and Washington Athletic Club’s 101 Club, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs, offers RBI through eight Clubs around King County.
The games room provides a wide range of social activities, games, quizzes, discussions, and imaginary areas for creative play. Often the busiest area of our Clubs, the games room is where fairness, respect, and the art of peace are benchmark lessons taught. Here, members are able to engage in friendly competition, practice their hand-eye coordination, and essentially, enjoy themselves. Activities include: ping-pong, pool, foosball, board and construction games, video games, and Lego’s.
Best of Both Worlds is a scholar-athlete program that honors outstanding young athletes who excel in the classroom. Each King County Club selects an honoree that is given the opportunity to view a home Sonics game from a catered luxury suite, takes a group photo at center court with a Sonics player, and is recognized for his or her athletic/academic achievements during the game.
